On Sunday July 14th, 2002, MUJER: Musicians United for Justice, Equlity, and Respect and the FMLA: Femiist Majority Leadership Alliance, in conjunction with several other organizations in the El Paso area, are organizing a historic benefit event- The Mujer Festival - from 4:00 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. at the Club 101 complex, located in the historic union plaza district of downtown El Paso. The purpose of this concert is to bring exposure, both locally and nationally, to the violence perpetrated against women on the border, epitomized by the brutal murders of women in the city of Juarez, Mexico, our sister city on the border. Within the last nine years over 250 women have been raped, tortured and brutally murdered, and more than 200 women remain missing. During this time government and police agencies from both the United States and Mexico have done little to remedy this growing crisis.
One of the few bright spots that stand out in the midst of this tragedy has been the opening - in 1999 - of the Casa Amiga: Centro de Crisis in Cuidad Juarez. Casa Amiga is the only rape crisis and battered women's shelter in the entire city of Juarez, Mexico and the surrounding area, which encompasses a population of over 2 million people. Due to recent political changes in the city of Juarez, the government funding for Casa Amiga was completely eliminated, and they are left working solely off donations. So, in addition to raising awareness about the plight of women in border communities, it is MUJER's related goal to bring together musicians, activists, artists, and the media at this festival to raise funds for Casa Amiga.
The ongoing existence of Casa Amiga is crucial due to the hostile environment in which a large number of women are forced to live on the U.S. / Mexico border. In the year 2000 alone, Casa Amiga provided extensive services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, including 3,140 psychological therapies, 880 instances of legal assistance, 531 social work cases, and 80 instances requiring medical assistance. Casa Amiga also focuses on the critical components of education and prevention, which they address in numerous presentations throughout the year at schools, churches, community events, and businesses - including maquiladoras. Due to ongoing intervention by Casa Amiga, the Penal Code in Mexico has actually been modified to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could help publicize this vital event, which will include bands from El Paso, Juarez, Chihuahua, and Las Cruces, New Mexico. Headining the two main stages will be Sparta - the bands that includes three former members of El Paso's At the Drive-In, and Ozomatli, 2001 Grammy Award winners for Best Latin Rock/ Alternative performance. Currently we are planning for seven bands to appear on the indoor stage at Club 101 from 5:00 P.M. through 1:00 A.M., and three bands to appear on the outdoor stage at Volcano Joe's fom 7:00 P.M. through 10:30 P.M.
In addition to the musical stages, we will be using the third club in the complex - E9 Nightclub - from 4:00 P.M. through 1:00 A.M. for speakers, acoustic musicians, drum groups, artists, theatrical presentations, and multi-media productions, including a screening of Seniorita Extraviada - winner of a Documentary Special Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival - by Oscar-nominated director Lourdes Portillo. There will be speakers who have already agreed to participate. This area will also include information tables provided by sympathetic organizations from the El Paso/ Juarez/ Las Cruces area.
Admission to the event is $10.00 at the door only, and the event is open to all ages. Gates will open at 3:00 P.M.
